The new division includes vehicles built from 1978 to 2000 that ran in the rally or would’ve been eligible . Replicas are allowed. There were a ton of really cool and bonkers retro rally vehicles during that time, and the “would’ve been eligible” bit means you could build your own original wild creation and enter it as long as it complies with the old rule book! How cool is that? The classic division won’t follow exactly the same route that the rest of the vehicles do, but the start and finish lines are the same.

So... What would you enter in the new division for 2021?

I’d enter one of my Alfa Milanos. I’ve been dreaming of building a “rally” version ever since I realized I liked the look of the high front end when the engine was out. Random and weird, I know, but It’s for sure my first choice for something like this right now. How would I do it? no idea,  but with unlimited time and money I’d love to figure it out!

As it happens, I saw an ad only a few weeks ago and thought “I wish Dakar had a Classics class”

Kinja'd!!!

Cheap too: they’re only asking US$10k for it, which for one of only 200 Pajero Evos equipped with a Manuel seems insanely low even if it does have 140k miles on the clock . Of course the purchase price would be only a fraction of the cost...

https://www.driven.co.nz/used-cars-for-sale/mitsubishi/pajero/auckland/north-shore-city/580530/2222/

Also:

This vehicle qualifies for Janssen’s Mechanical and Electrical Warranty with Free Emergency Roadside Breakdown Assistance (from $695)

I figure if they’re dumb enough to issue a warrantee on a Dakar homologation special, they can’t really complain if you ring them from outback Saudi Arabia and ask for dune roadside assistance. It’s basically the Carmax warrantee of Rally Raid.

The Paris-to-Dakar race creator was inspired by America’s obsession with desert endurance, with a prime example being the Mint 400, a race known in its early days for attracting all kinds of wild and weird entries. One of the most unusual was the Oldsmobile Cutlass campaigned by Hollywood star and noted gearhead James Garner. After three years of driving an essentially stock Cutlass on the sand (albeit with a ruggedized suspension setup), Garner decided to take things a step further and together with Vic Hickey created the “Banshee”.

Featuring a fibreglass body designed and produced by George Barris (and which was over a foot shorter than that found on a stock Cutlass), the Banshee was motivated by a 455-cubic-inch Olds V8 good for 480 horsepower. The motor sat nearly inside the passenger compartment, next to the driver for weight balance, and a tube frame and 11 inches of suspension travel rounded out the package. Massively fast (with a top speed of 144 mph), Garner won a single off-road race in the Banshee and also managed to flip it, necessitating a rebuild before Mickey Thompson could drive it the year after.

The Dakar Range Rover classics are things I want more than many things, but to actually be able to use one in anger? Hell yes.

Kinja'd!!!

I do actually have a ‘93 V8 that presumably could be turned into a Dakar version...

I dunno yet,  I’ll make a decision once it’s back on the road and I can actually have a better look around as it’s currently in a rather cramped garage that makes working and looking at it quite hard. That and it’s electrics have gone wrong, but as it’s a Range Rover Classic... what do you expect?
